The 2019 tennis tournaments are barely underway and yet we’re already seeing rising stars taking out top seeds who, on paper at least, should have been confident of a “walk in the park” straight sets victory over their opponent. A notable example of the ability to give spectators and players alike a shock came from qualifier Bianca Andreescu during the first week of the year at the Auckland International; the 18-year-old Canadian beat Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Hsieh Su-wei, all big names with a ranking far higher than Andreescu’s ranking of 152 in the world going in to the competition. She finished the Auckland International as runner up; Georges took the title after a competitive three set match.
